How to measure for new furniture

When purchasing a new bed frame or mattress, it's important to ensure it will fit not only in its intended location, but also through all access points leading to that room. This includes doorways, hallways, and staircases. To help you avoid potential delivery issues, we offer advice and guidance on how to accurately measure both your furniture and your access routes.

1. Find the dimensions of your chosen product(s)

Remember to check the dimensions of the items you've chosen. For lower items like bed frames and mattresses, pay close attention to the width and length.

It's also crucial to check the packaging dimensions to ensure the items can be maneuvered through your home and into the desired room.

You can find all the necessary measurements on the product page under the "Product Specs" tab.

2. Measure the intended space in your chosen room

It's important to carefully measure the intended location of your new furniture to ensure it fits comfortably and allows for features like drawers to fully open. Use a tape measure to determine the width and length of the space, and make sure these measurements are greater than the dimensions of the product you want to buy.

When checking product dimensions, consider the maximum width or length, especially for items like divan beds where drawers extend.

If placing furniture in an alcove, measure from skirting board to skirting board, not wall to wall. The skirting boards can reduce the usable space by a centimeter or two.

3. Measure your front door

Here are two options for measuring your front door.

Option 1

Open your front door as wide as possible and measure from the outer edge of the door to the other side of the door frame from the narrowest point (A). If the width of your largest box (B) is less than the width of your doorframe (A), then it should fit through.

Option 2

If the first option doesn't work, then the box may fit through the door upright instead. Measure the height of your door frame (B). If your door frame height (B) is higher than the box's length (A), then it should fit. Ensure there's enough room for the full length of the box or mattress to get through your hallway for this method.

Remember for bed frames that include Headboards, this is the largest of the packages - so you will need to ensure that your measurements are large enough for the headboard to get through.

4. Measure your hallways and internal doors

Once you've confirmed your order will fit through the front door, the next step is to check the hallway and interior doorways. Measure the width of these areas at their narrowest points to ensure the item can pass through. Be sure to account for any obstructions like radiators, shelving, or other fixed furniture. If all your measurements are greater than the height of the packaged item, it should be possible to move it through your home.

5. Measure stairways and staircases

Measure the width of any staircases at their narrowest point, just as you did for hallways and doorways. If there are landings, also measure their depth, width, and height. If the item will need to be lifted over a bannister, ensure there's enough clearance between the bannister rail and the ceiling.

Remember to include light fittings and handrails in your measurements, as these cannot be removed during delivery.

6. Prepare the spaces for delivery

Now you've identified that your product will fit the space required and can reach that space, you'll need to prepare it for delivery. First, make sure the intended room is clear of debris or other furniture.

Then, ensure the access route is also clear of any hazards. For example, if you have any house plants or picture frames which may get knocked, move them to a safe spot before your delivery date. Please also remember to get any pets out of the way.
